미네르바, 이타카에 내려오다 1
She said: the sandals of celestial mould,
아테나는 말을 마치자, 신들의 솜씨로 만들어진 샌들(을 신으니),
Fledged with ambrosial plumes, and rich with gold,
신성한 깃털들이 돋아나고, 황금 가득하여
Surround her feet: with these sublime she sails
그녀 발을 애워쌓았으니, 이 숭고함으로 아테나가 날아 올라
The aerial space, and mounts the winged gales;
하늘을 가르며 날개 달린 바람을 타고 올라
O'er earth and ocean wide prepared to soar,
땅과 넓은 바다 위 어디든 날아갈 준비가 되었네,
Her dreaded arm a beamy javelin bore,
위엄있는 그녀의 팔에는 빛나는 창이 들려 있고
Ponderous and vast: which, when her fury burns,
묵직하고 거대하여: 그녀의 분노가 타오를 때면
Proud tyrants humbles, and whole hosts o'erturns.
오만한 폭군들을 굴복시키고, 군대 전체를 뒤엎어버리네.
From high Olympus prone her flight she bends,
높은 올림포스에서 몸을 아래로 기울여 날아서
And in the realms of Ithaca descends,
이타카의 영토에 내려서네.
Her lineaments divine, the grave disguise
그녀의 신성한 모습이 엄숙한 변장으로 감추어졌고,
Of Mentes' form conceal'd from human eyes
인간들의 눈에는 멘테스 모습으로 보이리라.

멘테스는 타피오스 땅의 왕이었다.
A glittering spear waved awful in her hand.
그녀의 손에는 위엄 있게 빛나는 창이 들려 있었네.
There in the portal placed, the heaven-born maid
궁전 문 앞에서, 하늘에서 태어나신 그 여신은
Enormous riot and misrule survey'd.
엄청난 방종과 무질서를 지켜보았네.
On hides of beeves, before the palace gate
궁전 문 앞에는 미가공 소가죽들이 깔려 있고,
(Sad spoils of luxury), the suitors sate.
(사치로 비참하게도 도살된 (전리품)), 구혼자들이 앉아 있었다.
With rival art, and ardour in their mien,
서로 경쟁하는 기술과열정을 (그대로) 얼굴에 드러낸 채,
At chess they vie, to captivate the queen;
체스를 두며 겨루니, 그들은 왕비의 마음을 사로잡으려고 함이라.
Divining of their loves. Attending nigh,
자신의 사랑이 이루어질지를 점쳐보면서. 가까이 시중들며,
A menial train the flowing bowl supply.
한 무더기 하인들이 계속해서 술잔을 채우고 있네.
Others, apart, the spacious hall prepare,
다른 하인들은 따로 넓은 연회장을 준비하고,
And form the costly feast with busy care.
값비싼 잔치를 차리느라 분주히 움직하네.
텔레마코스, 낯선 손님을 맞이하다
There young Telemachus, his bloomy face
그곳에는 젊은 텔레마코스가 있었다네, 그의 젊고 활기찬 얼굴은
Glowing celestial sweet, with godlike grace
천상처럼 감미롭게 빛나고, 신과 같은 우아함으로
Amid the circle shines: but hope and fear
사람들 가운데서 돋보였다네. 그러나 희망과 두려움이
(Painful vicissitude!) his bosom tear.
(고통스운 운명의 우여곡절이여!) 그의 가슴이 찢겨지나니.
Now, imaged in his mind, he sees restored

In peace and joy the people's rightful lord;

While his fond soul these fancied triumphs swell'd,

The stranger guest the royal youth beheld;
젊은 왕자는 낯선 손님을 보았네;
Grieved that a visitant so long should wait
그는 손님이 그렇게 오랫동안 기다려야 했던 것을 슬퍼했네
Unmark'd, unhonour'd, at a monarch's gate;
군주의 왕궁 문 앞에서 아무도 주목하지 않고 아무런 대접도 받지 못한 것을;
Instant he flew with hospitable haste,
그는 즉시 손님을 환대하려고 서둘러 달려갔고,
And the new friend with courteous air embraced.
공손한 태도로 새로 온 손님을 맞아들였다네.
