텔라마코스, 낯선 손님을 환대하다
"Stranger, whoe'er thou art, securely rest,
"낯선 분이여, 그대가 누구이든 안심하고 쉬십시오.
Affianced in my faith, a ready guest;
제 신의로 성의를 다해 기꺼이 손님을 맞겠나니
Approach the dome, the social banquet share,
궁전 안으로 오셔서 우리와 함께 음식을 나누시고
And then the purpose of thy soul declare."

Thus affable and mild, the prince precedes,

A silver laver of capacious size;
널찍한 크기의 은 세면 대야를 채우니;
They wash. The tables in fair order spread,

They heap the glittering canisters with bread:

Viands of various kinds allure the taste,
각종 (고기) 음식들이 입맛을 돋우고,
Of choicest sort and savour, rich repast!
최고로 선별된 재료와 맛으로 차린 만찬이었다네!
Delicious wines the attending herald brought;
시중드는 전령(케리크스:고대 궁중 음식 시중듦)은 맛있는 포도주를 가져왔고,
The gold gave lustre to the purple draught.
황금 잔은 짙은 자줏빛 포도주를 더욱 윤기롭게 했다네.
구혼자들, 호화로운 잔치에 빠지다 2
Lured with the vapour of the fragrant feast,
향기로운 음식에서 피어오르는 냄새에 이끌려
In rush'd the suitors with voracious haste;
구혼자들이 게걸스럽게 서둘러 몰려들었다.
Marshall'd in order due, to each a sewer
그들이 서열대로 자리를 잡자, 한 사람마다 한 명의 시종(고대 상차림 시종)이
Presents, to bathe his hands, a radiant ewer.
손을 씻을 수 있도록 빛나는 물병을 내밀었다네.
Luxurious then they feast. Observant round

Gay stripling youths the brimming goblets crown'd.

To Phemius was consign'd the chorded lyre,
현이 달린 수금이 페미오스에게 들려지니(맡겨지니),
Whose hand reluctant touch'd the warbling wire;
그는 내키지 않는 손으로 새가 노래하는 듯 현을 뜯었다.
Phemius, whose voice divine could sweetest sing
신성한 목소리로 가장 아름답게 노래할 수 있는 페미오스는
High strains responsive to the vocal string.
노래하는 듯한 현의 울림에 맞추어 장엄한 곡조를 뽑아내네.
